Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge
The Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge is a bridge connecting Downtown and West Dallas over the Trinity River and first opened in March 2012. The bridge was designed by internationally renowned architect and engineer Santiago Calatrava. This stunning bridge with a 400 foot center arch connects Woodall Rodgers Freeway seamlessly to Singleton Boulevard in West Dallas. Besides providing the City with a signature structure and artfully changing the skyline, City, business and civic leaders believed the new transportation connection would spur economic development in West Dallas and help to bring people down to the river, while also fostering unity across the north and south divide in the City. CONTINENTAL AVENUE BRIDGE The Continental Avenue Bridge is a walking bridge paralleling the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge over the Trinity River. The Continental Avenue Bridge (then known as the Lamar-McKinney Viaduct) was constructed in 1933, to carry cars along the swelling Trinity River to West Dallas, twenty years after the 1908 flood that drowned most of the area. The bridge had fallen into a state of disrepair by 2010, around the time when plans were made to re-construct Continental Avenue and the bridge. The bridge developers decided, that during the reconstruction of the bridge, that there was no need for the bridge to be carrying road traffic anymore, as the neighboring Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge was already constructed to do so. The bridge followed nearby Klyde Warren Park's design of an open park (or bridge, in this matter) for families to play in. The bridge opened two years after the Margaret Hunt Hill bridge did, on Sunday, June 15, 2014 (Father's Day). It opened with a playground, a splash park, lounge chairs, human-sized chess boards, and a ceiling of cloth to shade the area, along with many trails surrounding the bridge in the Trinity River Basin and on the levees. This bridge is part of the greater Trinity River Project.
