R. Gerald Turner Centennial Quadrangle at Southern Methodist University

A nationally ranked private university with seven degree-granting schools, Southern Methodist University (SMU) is a distinguished center for teaching and research in Dallas. Noted for its small classes, leadership opportunities, international study and innovative programs, SMU was opened to students in 1915. Today SMU operates satellite campuses in Plano, Texas, and Taos, New Mexico. Founded in 1911 by the United Methodist Church in partnership with civic leaders, SMU was shaped by the entrepreneurial spirit of the region and today is nonsectarian in its teaching and committed to academic freedom and open inquiry. In the eastern quadrant of the Southern Methodist University campus, the R. Gerald Turner Centennial Quadrangle, honoring a university president is a central space amid a new enclave of buildings that includes the Collins Center for Business, the Lyle School of Engineering and the Laura Lee Blanton Student Center. The quadrangle features the Gail O. and R. Gerald Turner Centennial Pavilion and Cooper Centennial Fountain, the latter of which was designed as a terrace that extends the architectural order of the symmetrical façade of the Blanton Student Center to the level of the quadrangle. The building, fountain and pavilion are arranged intentionally to retain their own identity while coexisting harmoniously in the same space.
