Rockwall Harbor Main Square at Rockwall
A city in Rockwall County—the second wealthiest county in Texas by median income—Rockwall offers residents a relatively high standard of living. Name from a naturally jointed geological formation that looks like an artificial wall, the Rockwall area originally was occupied by Caddo Indians then the Creek Indians in the early 19th century. In 1851, the first Anglo-American settlers moved to the area and started to dig wells. While digging, they found large underground rock walls thought to be manmade but later understood as jointed, natural sandstone dikes with intruded Cretaceous marl. While originally part of Kaufman County, in 1873, Rockwall County was formed with Rockwall as the county seat. Overlooking Lake Ray Hubbard, Rockwall Harbor main square boasts a large central fountain in front of the Cinemark Theater.
