John Fitzgerald Kennedy Memorial

Erected in 1970 in the West End Historic District, the John Fitzgerald Kennedy Memorial monument was designed by noted architect Philip Johnson. Simple but profoundly moving, the monument is an open-air concrete memorial one block away from Dealey Plaza, where Kennedy was assassinated. The plaza in which is sits is a place of quiet reflection while eight columns support the all-white granite structure. Standing 30 feet high and 50 feet wide, the roofless space captures the feeling of loss felt around the world following Kennedy’s assassination in Dallas on November 22, 1963. The memorial was built on land donated by the city and features only three written words—John Fitzgerald Kennedy—carved into the stone and painted gold. By day, the floating white walls are reflected on the monument’s gilt lettering. At night, the landmark monument is lit by flood lights.
