Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge and the Texas Pacific Railway Trinity River Bridge
First opened in March 2012, the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge connects Downtown and West Dallas across the Trinity River Corridor. Designed by internationally renowned architect and engineer Santiago Calatrava, the iconic white bridge features a signature 400-foot center arch that artfully changed the Dallas skyline. Connecting Woodall Rodgers Freeway seamlessly to Singleton Boulevard in West Dallas, the bridge has spurred economic development in West Dallas and helped bring people down to the river while fostering unity across the geographic north and south divide in the city. Running parallel to the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge, the Texas Pacific Railway Trinity River Bridge is a metal Warren truss bridge that was built by the Texas and Pacific (T&P) Railroad in 1930. The T&P was merged into the Missouri Pacific RR in 1976 and is now part of the Union Pacific RR. The bridge is used by Amtrak trains and the Trinity Railway Express commuter rail as well as a local Class III switching railroad, the Dallas Garland and Northeastern. As such, the bridge is a favorite spot for railroad fans for spotting trains on their way out of Dallas. The concrete bridge sports a variety of interesting and artistic graffiti, which become covered when the Trinity River floods.
