John G. Mahler Student Center and the Henry Blackaby Hall at Dallas Baptist University
Formerly known as Dallas Baptist College, Dallas Baptist University (DBU) is a Christian liberal arts university located about 12 miles southwest of Downtown Dallas near Mountain Creek Lake. Founded in 1898 as Decatur Baptist College, Dallas Baptist University currently operates two other campuses in Plano and Hurst. The John G. Mahler Student Center became the first new building on the Dallas Baptist University (DBU) campus in more than 20 years when it was dedicated in 1992. Designed as a near replica of Independence Hall in Philadelphia, it was the first of many new buildings erected in the Georgian architectural style on the campus. Henry Blackaby Hall at Dallas Baptist University (DBU) is a facility that houses Founders Bookstore, Music Department classrooms and practice rooms, music faculty instructional studios and DBU’s Online Education Department. Named in honor of Dr. Henry Blackaby, a renowned Christian author and Baptist leader, Blackaby Hall sits atop University Hill, just south of the John G. Mahler Student Center and the Patty and Bo Pilgrim Chapel. Blackaby Hall reflects DBU’s signature colonial-style architecture and is modeled after the north elevation of Independence Hall in Philadelphia with signature red-brick walls, balustrades between end wall chimneys and parapets. Like Independence Hall, the front boasts marble panels and belt courses, soapstone quoins and cast-stone modillion cornices, making it distinct from other buildings at DBU.
