Houston Street Viaduct
Built in 1910 after the devastating flood of 1908 separated Dallas from Oak Cliff for weeks, the Houston Street Viaduct was designed by Ira Hedrick using a truss and arch design like a Roman aqueduct from locally available concrete mixed onsite with water from the Trinity River and gravel from pockets of alluvial soil in West Dallas and around Fair Park. The bridge has more than 50 arches, one of which is wider than the rest at 95 feet, which was designed for boat and barge traffic.
