Lone Star Park at Grand Prairie
Located 14 miles west of Dallas and 15 miles east of Fort Worth, Grand Prairie is bisected by the western fork of the Trinity River. Originally an Indian Trading Post and a stop on the stage coach line from Dallas to Fort Worth, Grand Prairie was founded in 1863 as Dechman after its founder Alexander McRae Dechman. The name changed to Grand Prairie in 1877, and it was incorporated as a city in 1902. First opened in 1997, the Lone Star Park horse racing track is one of Grand Prairie’s most notable attractions. Offering both thoroughbred and quarter-horse racing, the track hosts the Lone Star Million Day, a thoroughbred event held each Memorial Day with seven stakes races. The Lone Star Park also prominently features a bronze sculpture of Alysheba, a celebrated local champion horse.
