Dealey Plaza

Located in the historic West End District of Downtown Dallas, Dealey Plaza is infamous as the location of the assassination of John F. Kennedy on November 22, 1963. Named for George Bannerman Dealey (1859–1946), a civic leader and early publisher of The Dallas Morning News who campaigned for the area’s revitalization, the plaza is outlined by monuments honoring prominent Dallas residents that predate President Kennedy’s visit. A cenotaph monument honoring President Kennedy is located one block away. Today, the plaza is visited daily by tourists, and the Sixth Floor Museum occupies the top two floors of the former Book Depository. The buildings immediately surrounding the plaza have not been changed since 1963, which presents a stark contrast to the ultra-modern Dallas skyline behind it. In 1993, the area was named a National Historic Landmark to preserve the historic plaza, street rights-of-way and buildings and structures nearby that are visible from the assassination site and identified as witness locations or possible assassin locations.
