Dealey Plaza Obelisk
Standing approximately 25 feet tall, the Dealey Plaza Obelisk was built in 1940 to commemorate the birthplace of Dallas. A bronze plaque at its base reads “Within this small park was built the first home. Which also served as the first courthouse and postoffice, the first store and the first fraternal lodge.” Dedicated to the Pioneers of Civic Progress by the Park Board, it was erected in Dealey Plaza, which was constructed as part of a late New Deal public works effort to help alleviate unemployment during the Great Depression. Since Dealey Plaza has become infamous for being the site of President John F. Kennedy’s assassination in 1963, people often mistakenly believe that the obelisk was set up in his honor.
