City Hall

One of the most distinctive structures in Dallas, City Hall is an inverted pyramid-style building completed in 1978. Planning for City Hall began 1965, as part of the “Goals for Dallas” program, which was designed to restore the city’s reputation after the assassination of President Kennedy. Designed by world-class architect I.M. Pei, the building is the fifth City Hall in Dallas and features cast-in-place concrete with a cantilevered façade that has seven above-grade and two below-grade floors. Around the building is a seven-acre entry plaza that sits above a 1,500-car underground garage. Boasting some Henry Moore sculptures, the two-block by one-block plaza holds several outdoor festivals and special events throughout the year and features a 180-foot-diameter reflecting pool, a variable-height fountain and three distinctive 84-foot-high flagpoles as well as native Texas landscaping with live and red oaks.
