Tenor and Contralto Status by David Newton at Fair Park
Registered as a Dallas Landmark and National Historic Landmark, Fair Park is a recreational and educational complex that is home to nine museums, six performance facilities, a lagoon and the largest Ferris wheel in North America. Many buildings on the complex were constructed for the 1936 Texas Centennial Exposition. Most of the exposition buildings that still survive are recognized as significant examples of Art Deco architecture. Gracing the Esplanade Fountain in Fair Park are two 15-foot-tall bronze statues recreated by local sculptor David Newton to pay homage to the originals, which were at Fair Park’s opening in 1936. The original Tenor and Contralto statues were created by Laurence Tenney Stevens but disappeared and likely were melted down for the war effort during World War II.
